Is Online Counselling Right for You? What to Expect

A few years ago, if someone had told you that you could do therapy from your living room couch in your favourite sweatpants, you might have raised an eyebrow. But online counselling has become one of the most popular ways people access mental health support, and for good reason.

Whether you’re in Abbotsford, somewhere else in the Fraser Valley, or anywhere in BC, virtual therapy makes it possible to get the help you need without the commute, the waiting room, or the time away from your day. I offer online counselling as part of my practice, and I’ve seen firsthand how well it works for so many people.

If you’ve been thinking about trying it but aren’t sure what to expect, this post is for you.

What Is Online Counselling? 💻

Online counselling is therapy that happens over a secure video call instead of in a physical office. You and your therapist connect face to face through a screen, using a platform designed specifically for healthcare that keeps your sessions private and confidential.

It’s the same therapeutic process you’d experience in person. The conversations, the tools, the relationship you build with your therapist, none of that changes. The only difference is where you’re sitting when it happens.

Some people assume online therapy is a watered-down version of the real thing. It’s not. It’s just a different format, and for a lot of people, it turns out to be a better fit than they expected.

How Virtual Therapy Works 🔧

The process is simple. Before your first session, you’ll book an appointment through my online booking system. I’ll send you a secure video link ahead of time, and at your appointment, you click the link and we’re connected.

You don’t need any special equipment. A phone, tablet, or laptop with a camera and a decent internet connection is all it takes. Find a quiet, private spot where you feel comfortable talking openly, and you’re set.

Sessions typically run the same length as in-person appointments, either 60 or 90 minutes depending on what works best for you. And everything we discuss is protected by the same confidentiality standards that apply to in-person therapy.

Benefits of Online Counselling 🌟

There are some real, practical advantages to online therapy that go beyond just convenience.

No commute. If you’re in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, or anywhere in the Fraser Valley, you don’t have to factor in drive time or parking. If you’re in a more remote part of BC, you get access to support that might not be available locally.

Easier to fit into your schedule. You can book a session during a lunch break, after the kids are in bed, or whenever works for your life. There’s no travel buffer needed on either side of the appointment.

More comfortable for some people. Being in your own space can make it easier to open up. For people who feel anxious about going to an office or sitting in a waiting room, this can make a real difference.

Consistency. Life gets busy. Kids get sick. Weather happens. Online therapy makes it easier to keep your appointments even when things come up, which means more consistent progress over time.

For many people, online counselling is simply the most accessible form of mental health support available, and accessible support is support that actually gets used.

Is Online Therapy as Effective as In-Person Therapy? 📊

This is the question everyone asks, and the short answer is yes.

Research consistently shows that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for most common concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship issues. The quality of the therapeutic relationship, not the format, is what drives results.

That said, online therapy isn’t the right fit for every situation. If someone is in an acute crisis, dealing with severe trauma that requires specialized in-person techniques, or doesn’t have a private space to talk, in-person sessions might be the better option. That’s something we can figure out together.

For the majority of people I work with, virtual sessions work just as well as sitting across from me in my office. Some clients even tell me they prefer it.

Who Should Consider Online Counselling? 🤔

Online counselling can be a great option if you live outside of Abbotsford or anywhere in BC, Canada, and want to work with a registered therapist online, your schedule makes it difficult to get to in-person appointments, you have mobility challenges or health concerns that make travel difficult, you feel more comfortable in your own space, you’ve been putting off therapy because the logistics felt like too much, or you’re a busy parent and need flexibility.

Basically, if the idea of therapy appeals to you but something about the logistics has been holding you back, online counselling might be the thing that makes it actually happen.

What to Expect in Your First Online Counselling Session 🤝

If you’ve never done virtual therapy before, it’s natural to feel a little unsure about how it will go. Here’s what a typical first session looks like.

We start with a conversation. I’ll ask about what brought you here, what’s been going on in your life, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. There’s no pressure to share everything at once. We go at your pace.

I’ll also explain how I work, what you can expect from the process, and answer any questions you have. The first session is really about building a connection and making sure we’re a good fit for each other.

By the end of it, most people feel relieved. Not because everything is fixed, but because they’ve taken the first step and it wasn’t as intimidating as they thought it would be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is online counselling effective for anxiety and depression?
Yes. Multiple studies have shown that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for treating anxiety and depression. The key factor is the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist, not whether you’re in the same room.

What do I need for online therapy sessions?
A phone, tablet, or laptop with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a quiet, private space where you can speak freely. That’s it. No special apps or software to install.

Is virtual therapy confidential and secure?
Absolutely. Online sessions are conducted through a secure, encrypted platform that meets healthcare privacy standards. Everything discussed in session is protected by the same confidentiality rules as in-person therapy.

How do I know if online counselling is right for me?
If you’re comfortable using video calls and have a private space to talk, online counselling will likely work well for you. If you’re unsure, a free consultation is a great way to see how it feels before committing.

Can online counselling be as helpful as in-person therapy?
For most people, yes. The format is different but the process and outcomes are the same. Many clients who start with online sessions end up preferring them because of the convenience and comfort of being in their own space.

Taking the first step is the hardest part.

If you’ve been going back and forth about whether online counselling is right for you, you don’t have to decide alone. A quick conversation can help you figure out if it’s a good fit.

I work with individuals and couples throughout BC, both online and in person at my practice in Abbotsford. Whether you’re across town or across the province, I’m here to help.

👉 Book a free consultation, no pressure, no commitment. Just a conversation about what’s going on and whether we’d be a good fit.
